Cairns Regional Council in spotlight over ban of shared e-scooters on footpaths

 Despite the Queensland government announcing tougher new e-scooter rules, one city is standing firm in its reluctance to allow shared vehicles on its footpaths.

Cairns Regional Council has knocked back several requests from e-scooter companies to work in the area while neighbouring councils are expanding the reach of shared e-scooters.

Shared e-scooters allow travellers to hire the scooter with an app, ride the scooter to their destination, and then leave it in a designated area available for the next person to hire.

Last year Beam scooters started operating in Port Douglas with just nine partner resorts and businesses, which has now been expanded to 14.

Brisbane City Council approves Brisbane Racing Club's takeover of Stafford Bowls Club lease

 Despite concerns over transparency, Brisbane City Council has approved a behind-the-scenes transfer of a lease of the former Stafford Bowls Club from Crushers Leagues Club to Brisbane Racing Club.

BRC indicated it would spend $7.5 million improving the site, which had not been used since 2016, and grant $200,000 a year to the local community as part of the deal.

It would also provide "financial and in-kind support to the activities of the Gibson Park Committee" — Stafford District Cricket Club, Padua College and Brothers Junior Rugby League Football Club.

QLD government approves expansion plans for Olympic Athlete Village in Northshore Hamilton

 Plans to transform Brisbane’s Northshore Hamilton into a vibrant village hosting thousands of athletes for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games made headway today after Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles approved an expansion of the development area.

The amendments to the zone – known as the Northshore Hamilton Priority Development Area – follow public consultation and will see an additional 1.2km of waterfront added to the project.

The new precinct will host 10,000-plus athletes and team officials for the Olympic Games and roughly 5,000 for the Paralympic Games. Following the major sporting events, the area will be converted to provide 1,750 apartments, as well as a commercial and retail space.

Embattled startup News.net to ‘suspend operations’, staff still owed thousands

 Embattled journalism startup News.net will suspend operations from the close of business today amid a major pay dispute with its employees and suppliers who are owed thousands of dollars in unpaid wages and invoices.

The company’s sole director Brendt Munro told staff on Wednesday evening that he had no choice but to temporarily stop operating, three days after this masthead revealed the entity was facing federal court action over its inability to pay staff and third-party services. NEXTDC opens $1.5b data centre in Melbourne to feed the insatiable ‘data beast’

Australian banks close hundreds of branches and ATMs as services move online

 More than 1,600 bank branches closed nationally in the past six years, new data shows, with 309 branches axed in the last financial year alone. 

The latest data from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), released on Wednesday, revealed in the financial year ending June 2022, 96 branches closed in NSW, 57 closed in Queensland, and 88 closed in Victoria.

APRA's annual authorised deposit-taking points of presence data followed last month's federal task force report into regional banking.
