Gold Coast Business Week: The 2030 business trends playing out in the 2020s

The pandemic has brought the future forward by a full decade, and businesses that aren’t ready for it could be left behind, according to futurist Michael McQueen.

From the emergence of artificial intelligence and changes in the way labour markets operate, McQueen believes the 2030s are effectively playing out in the 2020s and this will deliver radical game-changing shifts to the economy over the next few years.

Addressing the opening event at Gold Coast Business Week, a business breakfast hosted by the City of Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise, McQueen said the biggest shift was already upon us with Millennials getting older and Generation Z set to take over as the dominant demographic in the work force. They are also an emerging well-heeled consumer group that can’t be ignored.

Queensland taxpayers foot $2 million bill for inner-west Brisbane school planning

The Queensland government has spent $2 million planning a new primary school in inner-west Brisbane but after five years and two identified sites, the school’s location is still in doubt.

The Palaszczuk government announced in 2020 that it would build the school for $65 million to open by 2023. It is now budgeted to cost $90 million and open in 2024.

Following strong community opposition to the government's latest preferred location at the former Toowong Bowls Club site, Greens MP Michael Berkman revealed the government was reconsidering the location last week.

Collection House calls in administrators: Was Volt collapse the spark?

A recapitalisation plan has failed to save debt collector Collection House (ASX: CLH) after it languished for two years in COVID-induced doldrums and a weak national economic situation, with the company today announcing it has appointed administrators.

The Brisbane-based company today requested its securities be suspended from trading on the ASX and has appointed FTI Consulting as voluntary administrators who now have the ironic task of protecting Collection House from creditors chasing up debts of their own.

CLH said the decision came after “exhaustive attempts to restructure the business and raise additional funding were unsuccessful”. This included multiple divestments of assets including its debt ledger book to Credit Corp Group (ASX: CCP).

10 Simple Ways Businesses Can Cut Energy Costs

 Hi there,

I do not have much knowledge about energy saving but recently I was introduced to improving energy efficiency in my workplace. I was astounded by the impact of using energy efficient appliances and lighting in the office. I have been amazed by the things that can be done to reduce dependency on electricity. I have decided that I will get a solar panel for my office, which will help me to power up the whole building at a much lesser cost. Besides solar panel, we will be using more natural light and ventilation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It has been an eye-opening experience. To know more about this, do read the article shared below.

Ultra-fast internet provider GigaComm secures $20.5m to roll out mmWave vision

Endeavor Asset Management and Palisade Impact have backed ultra-fast internet provider GigaComm in a $20.5 million oversubscribed funding round that will support the telco’s foray into Brisbane and Canberra.

The Melbourne-based outfit claims to deliver speeds up to a Gigabit per second, which is more than 10 times faster than the national download average in Australia. The network, which incorporates an optical fibre and fixed wireless technology known as mmWave, is completely independent and bypasses the National Broadband Network (NBN).

mmWave is a short-range, high-frequency network technology delivered via small antennae, typically placed on the roofs of buildings. The frequencies are capable of carrying similar capacities to fibre, without the need to dig up streets and lay cables.

Brisbane patisserie chain Le Bon Choix caters to rising kneads with $5m production facility

Brisbane boulangerie and patisserie chain Le Bon Choix will open its ninth outlet in August after recently moving into a $5 million state-of-the-art production facility in Brendale, following "huge demand" that has prompted ambitious expansion plans.

At Le Bon Choix, which means "The Good Choice" in French, the decision to set up the 1,600sqm facility would have been a 'choix très difficile' for director and founder Savico Basset-Rouge, taking a leap of faith to grow the French Renaissance-style Queensland institution.

The home-grown company will open its next outlet in Indooroopilly in August, adding to retail outlets in Edward and Queen Streets in Brisbane CBD, in Ascot, Carindale, Chermside, North Lakes, Upper Mt Gravatt, and at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.

Brisbane's South Bank celebrates 30 years since its opening. And Donna Smith has been working there the whole time

1992. Wayne Goss was the premier. Jim Soorley was the lord mayor. Interest rates were falling. Billy Ray Cyrus's Achy Breaky Heart was topping the Australian charts.

And at the South Bank Parklands, you could ride a boat.

When it opened 30 years ago this week, thousands of balloons were released, colouring the sky above an excited crowd, in what an ABC News report at the time described as the biggest celebration since Expo 88.

Donna Smith was there. She was 16 and working in her father's lolly shop, which opened at South Bank the same day.

"I remember it being extremely busy. And lots and lots of people coming in and out of the store and even lining up to get in. It was crazy," Ms Smith said.
